INTOC GLOBAL IN TURKEY

A SILVER MEDAL FOR LUXEMBOURG

From May 29 to June 5, 2021, the International Online Competition (INTOC) Global was held in Ankara, Turkey. For the very first time, the Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg (FJSL) was represented by three laureates of the national Jonk Fuerscher contest 2021, who brought home a silver medal!

With her project in chemistry titled “Efficient Sulfur Dioxide Estimation in Wine: Improvements on the Ripper Titration”, Sarah Mackel (17) from the International School of Luxembourg evaluated an improved method for the amount of free sulfur dioxide used in the wine making process, allowing it to remain a lot safer, with less danger related to its storage, its aging process, and especially its taste.

The project by Sijie Ma (17) and Ziqiao Luo (18) , also from the International School of Luxembourg, explains the mechanisms of Fourier analysis and its application using the example of noise-cancelling headphones.

In addition to winning first place in their project field mathematics, Sijie and Ziqiao also managed to place second in the overall competition out of 186 projects from 21 countries, placing them just after the Philippines and before the United States.

“We are really excited to have participated in INTOC and actually be on the podium. We especially appreciated the support and guidance from our supervisors,” so Ziqiao and Sijie.

The three young scientists from the Grand Duchy were among 550 participants who had to present their individual projects via video conference for a panel of professional researchers and scientists from different fields.

The aim of INTOC Global - a young and international organisation - is to encourage and bring together productive young minds to find solutions for the real problems of the world. In addition to the International Online Competition, INTOC also organises online courses and seminars in the STEM fields for students to attend all year round.
