Ben Thuy, Palaeontologist at Natural History Museum Luxembourg and Board Member at the Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques a Luxembourg.

Ben presented his first Scientific work “The sea urchins of the genus Diplopodia from the Middle Bajocian of Rumelange (Lux.)” in 1999 at the age of 13.

Just as his colleague and former Jonk Fuerscher Robert Weis, Ben embraced the opportunity given to learn researching and producing scientific content, to confront ideas with an audience and a benevolent jury. Being such a young contestant has been quite a “Jump in Cold Water” but Ben remembers fondly his “naivety and lightness” at the time that would have disappeared with more experience.

When asked if the contest played a role in his career orientation, Ben says it definitely has been a practical test to learn that producing a research project was something he could do later for a living.

The contest also plays a small role in meeting the curator of the museum of natural history that would later become his workplace.

Today, Ben works as a paleontologist for the MNHN in Luxembourg and you can find him digging the ground in Luxembourg under any wether conditions in search for Fossils with his wife Lea Numberger-Thuy and colleagues. When not at work, organise an exhibition entitled ‘Rock Fossils’ building a bridge between two worlds that at first sight appear to have little in common, rock music and palaeontology to bring their fossils passion to a broader audience.

Ben will eventually accept a role of Board Member for the Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg where he can share his passions and valuable experience with new young scientist generations!
