Ozgu Gumustekin, former laureate of the 47th National Jonk Fuerscher, is now the beloved Executive Assistant of the Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg.
After the national contest in 2018, when she was awarded with the participation in the European Union Contest for Young Scientists, she pursued her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology at the University of Luxembourg.
During her participation at EUCYS that took place in Dublin, September of that year, she was lucky enough to meet many people interested in her research on the effect of dietary L-carnitine supplementation on T. molitor larvae growth and development.
She found that dietary L-carnitine supplementation plays a role on metabolism of T. molitor larvae by altering Beta oxidation and respiration rates which could potentially implicate the same on humans regarding the otherwise unknown effects of the supplement.
It was after this that she published her work with Scholars’ Press. During her studies at the University of Luxembourg, she remained highly involved with the Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg by volunteering and participating as supervisor in the International Activities. After carrying out various other internships as laboratories such as the LCSB in Luxembourg, she decided she would like to get a taste of promotion of science to the public before furthering her career in STEM. She was offered the opportunity to intern at the FJSL as Executive Assistant which allowed her to give back to the organisation that once opened up many doors for her.
“I consider myself, and other young scientists from Luxembourg, immensely lucky to have all the resources that the FJSL provides us. Not a lot of STEM students my age have had a portion of the encouragement I did and I am very thankful for that. We are supported from the moment that an idea buds in our heads on to the execution of our next big invention. This had broadened by perspective greatly back when I participated and it was evident to me that I needed to partake in the effort to provide the same for my peers and the next generations. I am so happy to be able to give back to the FJSL while also obtaining professional experience during my time here. “
She is planning on pursuing a Master’s Degree in Biomedicine, specialising in Pathophysiology at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands starting September 2022 while continuing to volunteer for the FJSL. She is hoping to stay involved with the Foundation in the future.
