Odile Weber

Botanist at the National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg

From successful contestant to active Volunteer

Botanist Odile Weber from the National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg is co-author of a new research and reference publication on The Western Woodlands of Ethiopia published by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters on February 1st, 2022. The work is the result of a long-standing collaboration between scientists in Luxembourg, Ethiopia, Denmark and the Netherlands and field work in western Ethiopia since 2012, supported by the Danish Carlsberg Foundation.

Odile developped a special interest in the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea, following two periods in the field in remote parts of Ethiopia. She has additionally written or co-authored ca. 20 papers on the taxonomy and conservation of Monocotyledons and African plants, on the semi-dry grasslands and forests in eastern Luxembourg and on the curation of the national herbarium of Luxembourg.

It is under the impulse of one of her teachers that Odile participated for the first time in the National Contest for Young Scientists in 1996 with her project "Can the sundew digest corpses" then a second time in 1998 "Influence of the moon on the germination of lettuce seeds".

Odile was seduced by the possibility of taking on the role of an actor in research and by the supervision of a young community of interest in the fields of science, the freedom to choose the subject and the possibility to confront one's methods with the rigor required by the conduction of a real project under the sign of the scientific method.

Odile is now participating in the national contest for young scientists as a volunteer.
