Prof. Dr Lucien HOFFMANN

Director of Environmental Research and Innovation department at the Luxembourg Institute of Science And Technology (LIST)

Prof. Dr. Lucien Hoffmann was a former Luxembourg National Jonk Fuerscher contestant in 1981 with his project «Contribution à l’étude des pelouses sèches».

Following the competition, Mr. Hoffmann completed a Master's degree followed by a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences in 1989 before becoming a professor of Plants Biology at the University of Luxembourg.

Having developed a taste for naturalist activities very early, it was with a project of analysis of the biotope of limestone lawns in Luxembourg that Prof. Hoffmann presented his thesis in front of a Jury during the competition of young scientists in 1981.

The former candidate will declare that despite the stressful aspect inherent to the passage in front of a jury of experts and the research work accomplished in an extra-curricular activity, the competition presented him at the time a rare opportunity to develop his presentation skills. This experience will later be beneficial in higher education.

It is this aspect, in addition to his ability to provide future researchers with the benefit of his experience and logistical support for research projects in biology, as well as a need to support young scientists who will have to face critical environmental challenges, that decided Prof. Hoffmann to join the FJSL Board of Directors.

The Young Scientists Contest is a federating activity that helps develop a scientific culture among young people, supports them in this adventure, and participates in creating memories and networks. The event's impact, as evidenced by our network of participants and volunteers throughout these 51 editions, remains significant throughout their personal life and great careers in research.
